‘Buck moon’ gives eerie morning backdrop to Statue of Liberty

These photos were taken early this morning as the July full moon (also known as the "Buck Moon" by Native Americans) set behind the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. A bright red-orange full moon lit up the city sky early Friday, creating an eerie glowing backdrop for the statue.

The eye-catching lunar event is called a “buck moon” because it occurs around the time of year that buck deer’s antlers push out from their foreheads, according to Space.com.

It’s also called the “full thunder moon” because it happens during a time of year of frequent thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, a similar-looking “blood moon,” having to do with lunar eclipses, was visible in Europe and Asia, but not North America.
