Feeding babies solid food helps them sleep better: study

Good news for tired new parents everywhere: A well-fed baby is a sleepier baby.

The JAMA Pediatrics Journal reports that infants sleep better when they start to eat solid foods early in life.

Babies who began eating solids at 3 months old showed small, but significant, improvements in nighttime sleep when compared with those who started on solids later. The early group also slept about 17 minutes longer per day and awoke less frequently throughout the night.

But don’t get those tiny spoons out quite yet: The World Health Organization, American Academy of Pediatrics and other groups recommend that infants be breast-fed exclusively for the first six months, after which solids can be introduced.
