Macaw that inspired the movie ‘Rio’ is now extinct in the wild

The Spix’s Macaw, the beautiful blue bird that inspired the movie “Rio,” is now extinct in the wild, according to a new study by BirdLife International.

The findings cast a dark shadow over the lively 2011 animated flick in which Blu, the last male Spix’s Macaw, flies all the way to Rio de Janeiro to mate with Jewel, the last surviving female, to save their species.

Brazil is a hot spot for bird extinctions. The study discovered four species were wiped out there — all attributed to intense deforestation.
