Does anyone else feel like the next Marvel phase should feature all female-led Marvel movies? Because I totally do. Next year, the massive studio will unleash the first female-centric movie in the 20-something movies they've completed so far: we're about to meet the incredibly powerful Captain Marvel. But that's not the only exciting release we're looking forward to; we received confirmation of a Black Widow movie back in January, and there are even rumblings of a Marvel movie with an all-female cast. Now, we can add another idea to the bank: what about a film featuring just the women of the Black Panther universe?!
Yes, we know Marvel has already signed up for a Black Panther sequel, but it really seems like "the more, the merrier" is the attitude in the Marvel universe. And we're not just pulling this out of nowhere; Black Panther director Ryan Coogler discussed the idea at the Cannes Film Festival. The conversation started when Coogler talked about how powerful the women of Wakanda are. "I think you could argue they are more important," he said. "There's a whole section of the film where T'Challa is out of the movie and you're just following the women . . . That's one of my favorite parts of the movie when I watched it, and I didn't expect that."
"We have these actresses who could easily carry their own movie."Coogler continued: "That part of it was exciting. We have these actresses who could easily carry their own movie . . . Some of them have before. We were so fortunate. I would watch a movie with them!" When asked, point blank, if he would do a Black Panther spinoff with just women, he was more than open to the idea. "That would be amazing if the opportunity came up. They did it in the comic-book version."
Luckily, it seems like Coogler isn't the only one warming up to the idea. Letitia Wright basically volunteered to jump in on the film. "Ready, big bro," she tweeted with a folded hands emoji. Between Captain Marvel, Black Widow, and the ideas for two different all-female Marvel films, things are about to get a whole lot more feminist in the superhero universe. And we are 100 percent here for it.
